Who is Tigers Draft Pick Casey Mize?

The Detroit Tigers held the #1 overall selecting in the MLB Draft. With it, they selected consensus top prospect Casey Mize from Auburn, but who exactly is Casey Mize?

He’s 6-foot-3, 220 pounds. He throws right handed, and he just might be the best pitcher from the SEC since David Price in was drafted first overall in 2007. His arsenal is devastating. He has a solid fastball, and a plus slider and cutter. His plus-plus pitch is an absolutely filthy split-fingered fastball that helped him tally over 300 strikeouts in 255 and 1/3 innings at Auburn this year.

Scouts have said all of his pitches have life, and everything moves. He pairs it with an ability to change speeds well and record a lot of swinging strikes. Medically, he’s been blessed to have a team doctor that is the go-to for pitchers in Dr. James Andrews, so there are little to no concerns about durability.

Off the field, Mize has been described as someone you’d want your daughter to marry. He’s a good teammate, a hard worker, and a guy with a team-first mentality. He’s the son of a detective and the brother of a police officer, so don’t expect him to be stirring up trouble in Motown either.

If there was ever a walking, talking definition of the term, “face of a rebuild”, Mize is it. He should be MLB ready sooner rather than later; and paired with Michael Fulmer, Alex Faedo, and Franklin Perez, the starting rotation for the Tigers looks very bright.
