Local College Roundup – Spring Arbor University

BASEBALL

The Cougars fell twice last Saturday to Indiana Wesleyan University in spectacular fashion. In a game 1 12-1 loss, the offense got out of the gates well, but failed to score in the final 7 innings, and Spring Arbor starter Duncan Patterson stumbled in the bottom of the first to put SAU behind the 8-ball early.

The game started with the Cougars’ Chris Triplett scoring on a Francisco Ondina single in the top of the first, but the bottom of the inning saw Indiana Wesleyan score eight runs. Duncan Patterson pitched a complete game, despite allowing 12 runs (9 earned). The Byron Center HS product fell to 4-5 and saw his ERA balloon to 6.62.

Game 2 was not much better, as Spring Arbor lost 10-3. Starter Gavin Harris lasted just 4.2 innings, allowing 5 runs before giving way to reliever Zachariah Devin. He would last 1.1 innings and allow another 5 runs. Nick Carroll would relieve him and provide 2 innings of scoreless work. Harris suffered the loss, falling to 5-4 on the season. Freshman Josiah Kitchen (Battle Creek Lakeview HS) had a great game offensively, going 3-for-4 in the losing effort.

The Cougars fell to 24-24 overall, and 14-12 in the Crossroads League, good enough for fourth place. They are 6.5 games behind first place Indiana Wesleyan. Next up, a 3:00pm game today at home against 3rd Place Huntington University.

SOFTBALL

The Cougars Softball team also dropped both sets in their doubleheader last weekend, as they also faced Indiana Wesleyan. The Wildcat softball team entered the weekend ranked #10 in the NAIA and sat in second place in the Crossroads League. Spring Arbor dropped game 1 5-3, despite Sidney Taylor’s 2-for-2 day at the plate, and Maddison Brock’s 2 RBI. Senior pitcher Kelsey Brown took the loss for SAU, pitching a complete 6 inning game, falling to 11-13 on the year.

Sophomore Lauren Heath was solid in game 2 on the mound. She threw a complete 6 inning game, allowing just 3 runs. The offense struggled against a tough Wildcat team, mustering just 5 hits. Heath drops to 11-10 on the year. For SAU at the plate, Jordan Burman, Kelsey Brown, Maddison Brock, and Aubrey Herrema would record hits in the shutout.

Spring Arbor next heads to the Crossroads League tournament in Indianapolis to face Mount Vernon Nazarene in the first round of play. Their game is tomorrow at noon.
