Former Tiger Scherzer “Immaculate” for the Second Time

Max Scherzer has joined Randy Johnson, Sandy Koufax, Lefty Grove, and Nolan Ryan as the only pitchers in baseball history to record two “immaculate” innings. An immaculate inning is when a pitcher records three consecutive strikeouts in the same inning on just nine pitches.

Scherzer’s first immaculate inning came last season against the Phillies, when he struck out Cesar Hernandez, Odubel Herrera, and Aaron Altherr in order. This time around, he fanned Johnny Field, Christian Arroyo, and Daniel Robertson to make history.

The immaculate inning is the second this season, with the first being recorded by Baltimore’s Kevin Gausmann against Cleveland back on April 24th.
