The Tigers add to their extensive disabled list with the addition of Francisco Liriano and Daniel Stumpf as of Tuesday.
Liriano is out with a right hamstring strain after complaining of pain following his start Saturday against the Chicago White Sox.
“He thought it was getting better, and obviously it’s not getting better,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “He’s having a hard time with it, so we’ll put him on the DL and let him get well. That’s all we can do. …
“He’s had a history of leg problems, as violent as he is with his windup. He’s always been able to make it back through it. This time, he’s pretty sore.”
Liriano will be replaced with Ryan Carpenter in the Tigers’ rotation.
Daniel Stumpf went on the DL after being diagnosed with ulnar nerve irritation in his left elbow. An MRI conducted Tuesday showed swelling in his elbow after Monday’s time on the mound.
“He was more stiff-arming than using his elbow. He told [bullpen coach Rick Anderson] he had a few zingers, giving him a little shock. That kind of tells you the story of why he was misfiring. He wasn’t even close,” Ron Gardenhire said of Stumpf’s May 28 outing.
Johnny Barbato has been brought up from Triple-A Toledo to replace Stumpf.
