Tigers blanked by Guardians

The Detroit Tigers faced a rainy Tuesday afternoon at Comerica Park, falling 5-0 to the Cleveland Guardians and wrapping up a brief two-game series.

With injuries plaguing their rotation, reliever Tyler Holton made his third start in seven days for the Tigers (52-57). Holton battled early, escaping a second-inning jam unscathed, but Detroit couldn’t capitalize on their own scoring chance in the bottom half. Holton exited after 2⅔ innings, giving way to Alex Faedo, who surrendered a home run to Josh Naylor in the fourth inning, putting Cleveland up 1-0.

Faedo struggled in the fifth, hitting Tyler Freeman and allowing an RBI double to Daniel Schneemann, extending the Guardians’ lead to 2-0. Meanwhile, Cleveland starter Gavin Williams stymied Detroit’s lineup, striking out eight over five innings.

Manager A.J. Hinch turned to Jason Foley in the eighth, but Foley’s recent struggles continued as he gave up a two-run homer to José Ramírez. Joey Wentz pitched the ninth and allowed a solo shot to Brayan Rocchio, sealing the Tigers’ fate.

Dominant closer Emmanuel Clase shut down the Tigers in the ninth, ending the game and the series. With this loss, Detroit fell to 6-7 against the AL Central leaders this season. The Tigers have a day off Wednesday before hosting the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.
