Local College Roundup – Jackson College

BASEBALL

The Jets baseball squad continues their strong season, sweeping a Sunday doubleheader against St. Clair County Community College. In the first game, Josh Markel pitched a brilliant complete game shutout, allowing just five hits, and striking out 3 in the 7-0 victory. He has yet to allow a run in conference play, and his season ERA dropped to an amazing 0.66. Offensively, Jackson was paced by leadoff man Parker Murdie, DH Hunter Teunion-Smith, and third baseman Keagan O’Brien who each had a pair of hits and first baseman Carlos Agens who drove in a pair of runs.

In game two, Xavier Hovinen recorded his first win of the year in a 6-1 win. Parker Murdie picked up two more hits to move his season average to .520, Carlos Agens picked up his 14th RBI, and left fielder Dylan Watson tallied his 48th RBI of the year in the win.

With the sweep, the Jets improve to 25-14 on the season and 17-8 in conference play. They are currently in second place in the MCCAA East Division, and have qualified for the Region XII tournament.

Up next for the Jets, they’ll travel to Glen Oaks Community College today for a single, 9-inning game. The first pitch is scheduled for 2pm.

SOFTBALL

The Jets Softball team continued their strong season, sweeping their doubleheader at Lake Michigan College last Sunday for their 4th and 5th straight wins.

In game 1, Allison LaPoint pitched a complete game to pick up her 11th win of the year. She would allow 3 runs, but the Jets offense was able to keep her ahead after a 3 run 5th inning, and a 4 run 8th. LaPoint is now 11-2 on the season, with a 1.99 ERA.

Offensively, Brooke Garabino and Haley Rose recorded a pair of hits. The runs came courtesy of Kylee Cochrane and Sabrina Sage, who each had 2 RBI; Garabino and Nicole Keeder each drove in one.

Game 2 was another offensive outburst for the Jets, who picked up an 8-1 win. Sabrina Sage recorded three hits, Nicole Keeder picked up three more RBI, Melanie Richardson knocked in 2, and Brooke Garabino and Haley Rose capped their strong weekends with RBIs.
