Girls High School Soccer

The Golden Eagles of Columbia Central traveled to face the Blackhawks of Leslie in girl’s varsity soccer action on Tuesday night and dropped a hard fought game by a score of 4-3.

Columbia got on the board first with a goal by freshman Mara Henry but Leslie would tie the game before halftime and the teams would go to intermission deadlocked at a goal apiece.

Leslie starting the second half strong, scoring quickly but Columbia would level the match midway through the half on another goal by Henry.

The Blackhawks would have a strong few minutes not long after the Golden Eagles tied the game, scoring two goals just a few minutes apart and appeared to have the game salted away but the visitors refused to go away quietly and continued to battle.  Eventually with just over 10 minutes remaining Columbia Central sophomore Kennedy Salter would receive a pass from Mara Henry and outrace a defender and tuck the ball away behind the Blackhawk goalie to draw within one.

The final 10 minutes were a wild scramble with Columbia creating several glorious scoring opportunities but in the end they were unable to beat the Leslie keeper for a fourth time.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the girls and their effort tonight.”  Said Columbia coach Andy Hosmer.  “Leslie is a very experienced, talented and disciplined team and we hung right in there with them.  The girls never gave up and never backed down and we had chances to come away with a tie tonight.  That shows real grit and character.”

Columbia falls to 3-1 on the season and 3-1 in the Cascades while Leslie improves to 5-1-1 over-all and 3-1 in the Cascades Conference.
