Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka delivered a commanding performance on Centre Court Sunday, defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6 (2) to advance to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time in her career. The 14th-seeded Osaka utilized her trademark flat groundstrokes and a dominant serve to neutralize Sabalenka’s fierce power on the warmest day of the tournament, with temperatures reaching 28 degrees Celsius (82 Fahrenheit). The victory snapped Osaka’s three-match losing streak against Sabalenka earlier this year and marked her first career win on the historic tournament’s main court.
Osaka set the tone immediately, breaking Sabalenka’s service games and wrapping up a dominant opening set in just 32 minutes while her opponent struggled with unforced errors. Though Sabalenka mounted a stronger challenge in the second set to force a tiebreak, Osaka remained composed, dictating the majority of the rallies to claim the tiebreak 7-2. The defeat marks Sabalenka’s first straight-sets loss at a Grand Slam tournament since 2020, snapping her streak of 14 consecutive major quarterfinals reached in events she contested.
“For me, this court is so special. This is the first match I’ve won on this court. It means a lot,” Osaka said following the match. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had so much fun on the court, and to do it here really means a lot. I lost to her three times in a row. That really sucked. I wanted to have the opportunity to overturn that.”
Sabalenka expressed candid frustration following the match, acknowledging that her top-ranked form was missing. “She overpowered me,” Sabalenka said in an interview covered by AP News. “I felt like it was incredible level from her.” Reflecting on her own performance, the Belarusian added, “I didn’t play my best, and she played probably her best. Sometimes that happens,” noting that “Level-wise, today,” “I wasn’t world No. 1.” Shifting her focus away from the court, Sabalenka added that she wanted to “get completely drunk, forget about tennis, and try to get in better shape.”
Prior to this year’s tournament, Osaka had never advanced past the third round in London. Osaka will look to maintain her momentum into the next round when she faces Czechia’s 10th seed, Karolina Muchova, for a spot in the semifinals.
