Soccer

The Western girls soccer team played their first home game against visiting Eaton Rapids Thursday night.  On a very sloppy field, both teams struggled to show much organization as it was difficult to make many quality passes.  Both teams had a few scoring chances in the first half but were unable to find the back of the net.  The second half started with Western coming out much more composed .  At the 66th minute mark, Rayah Hitt drew a foul outside the box.  Marina Walz stepped up to take the kick and sailed the ball just over the ER goalkeeper’s fingertips to put the Panthers up 1 – 0.   The Panthers would hold onto the lead through a late game attack by Eaton Rapids.  Western outshot Eaton Rapids 17 – 11.  However each team had 8 shots on goal.  Bella Miles would finish as the Offensive Player of the Game.  Joslyn Embury played a great game defending an ER top forward and would take home the Defensive Player of the Game award.  Meadow Pratt made 8 saves to record her second shutout in two games.

Western will travel to Milan this Saturday to play both Milan and Adrian in a Soccer Tri.

The Napoleon girls soccer team took their first action of the season today against Olivet. It was also Napoleon’s first varsity soccer game in program history. Napoleon fell to the Eagles by a score of 7-0, but the young team played tough against a very experienced and physical Olivet team. Joy Flack had 25 saves in net for the Pirates.

4/6/24 (Adrian)  Milan Tri Tournament

The Western girls varsity soccer team defeated Adrian Saturday morning with a score of 1-0.  The Panthers generated some early chances but weren’t able to get the winning goal until the 44th minute.  Nevaeh Hartshorn got in behind the defense and sent a shot into the side netting of the far post.  Grace Hull provided the assist.  The Panthers were outshot 16 to 10.  Meadow Pratt had 10 saves in the shutout and made some great saves throughout the game.  The defensive line composed of Marina Walz, Hailey Dodd, Jocelyn Embury, Grace Hull and Rachel Thomson did a tremendous job of not giving the Adrian offense many good opportunities.  The Panthers lost to the Maples 3-1 last season and were happy to flip the results this year.

4/6/24 (Milan)  Milan Tri Tournament

The Western varsity girls soccer team fell to Milan in game two of the Milan Tri tournament Saturday afternoon.  Western struggled to get much flow going as they had to play back to back games.  The heavy legs and lack of substitutes was a huge factor in the team not being able to provide much attack.  The game was stuck at 1-0 with Western getting a couple of late opportunities but Milan put the game out of reach with a converted penalty kick with 4 seconds left on the clock.

Western, Milan and Adrian each had 1 win on the day.

Meadow Pratt was awarded the Defensive Player of the Game.  Claudia Allen played well and consistently to win the Offensive Player of the Game award.   Maddy Cotey was the Honorary Captain for the day for her hard work and positive attitude throughout the week in practice.

Western will have some time to heal and rest as they only have one game next week .  They will travel to Sturgis on Wednesday.

Two new freshman pitchers made there debut and what a debut it was.

Devan Lowe was in the circle for game 2 and earned the win 15-2 with 8 strikeouts and went 2for4 with the bat. Brenna Crittenden was solid again at the plate going 2for2 with one single and a linedrive shot to left field for a double.

Springport Dominates Lumen in game 1 on Saturday April 6th winning by 15 run rule 19-4 in the middle of the 4th inning. We had 18 hits as a team thru only 4 innings. Rebekkah Betz led the team going 4for4 with 2 doubles and 2 singles while Brenna Crittenden and Chloey Speer went 3for4 both with 1 double and 2 singles. Morgan Shoemaker was in the circle earning the win with 6 strikeouts and 2 hits against.
Game 2 was a different story, Lumen had taken control by the end of inning 2 with a lead of 11-4. But Springport rallied back with multiple big hits by Brenna Crittenden, Rylee Siefert and a linedrive 3 run homerun by Morgan Shoemaker to tie it up in the 4th inning. Springport took the lead 12-11 in the top of the 7th inning on a single by Chloey Speer, she made it all the way to 3rd on a wild pitch and then scored on a passed ball. Then here is where it goes south for Springport, after a walk and a linedrive double by Lumen, Lily Ganton sends a shot to the moon and a walk off homerun seals the deal for Lumen to win 14-12.
